SUPERHARD METAL CERAMICS SMC-BN

SMC-BN is a modification of superhard materials based on the dense forms of boron nitride in the form of two-layer plates or workpieces for tipping cutting tools by brazing or by mechanical attachment.

The production of SMC-BN is achieved through the effect of high pressure and temperature on a metal binder and cBN powder in non-homogeneous temperature field. This ensures the manufacture of the final product with extremely high concentration of boron nitride and homogeneous distribution of its particles. The yield of good products is over 90 %, and technological process of producing metal ceramics is more cost-effective as compared with any of the world analogues.

The formation of SMC-BN takes place in a high pressure device of a “chechevitsa” type with the 38 mm diameter of the crater by using 500 or 630-ton presses. This allows to produce workpieces of superhard metal ceramics of 18 mm in diameter and up to 6 mm in height. The production rate of one press installation is not less than 30 pcs/hour.

Flexible manufacturing process allows to obtain superhard metal ceramics SMC-BN with predetermined properties for machining various materials, including: hardened steels of a wide range of hardness, grey pig irons, chilled cast irons, high strength irons, metal ceramic, glass- and carbon plastic composites, non-ferrous metals and alloys, etc.

The life of SMC-BN-tipped tools, as compared with tungsten-carbide tools, is from 8 to 15 times longer, depending on the hardness of the machined materials, with simultaneous intensification of the machining regimes by 1,5 to 2 times.
